Plot
First time writer/director Jake Goldberger takes the helm for this thriller about a man who returns to his hometown after receiving a letter from his high school sweetheart, who claims to be dying. It's been 25 years since Don McKay (Thomas Haden Church) turned his back on his hometown, and he never imagined he would ever return. But when a letter from his former girlfriend Sonny (Elisabeth Shue) appears in Don's mailbox, he can't resist visiting his old flame one more time, before her light disappears forever. When Don comes home and realizes that his memories of Sonny don't match up with the woman she is now, it quickly becomes apparent that he harbors a shameful secret from years gone by. Don McKay, CM (born 1942) is an award-winning Canadian poet, editor, and educator.
Born in Owen Sound, Ontario and raised in Cornwall, McKay was educated at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Wales, where he earned his PhD in 1971. He taught creative writing and English for 27 years in universities including the University of Western Ontario and the University of New Brunswick.
McKay is the author of twelve books of poetry, including Long Sault (1975), Lependu (1978), and Apparatus (1997). He has twice won the Governor General’s Award, for Night Field (1991) and Another Gravity (2000), and in June 2007 he won the Griffin Poetry Prize for Strike/Slip (2006).
Although publishing since 1973, literary writing on McKay’s poetry is new, and much critical examination of his work is yet to be done. He has made a wide impression as a teacher and editor. He is the co-founder and manuscript reader for Brick Books, one of Canada’s leading poetry presses, and was editor of the literary journal The Fiddlehead from 1991-96. He has participated in the Sage Hill Writing experience in Saskatchewan and he is Associate Director for poetry at the Banff Centre for the Arts Writing Studio. He has edited many books by fellow poets, including Ken Babstock, George Elliot Clarke, Tim Lilburn, Barbara Colebrook Peace, and Michael Redhill.
McKay is an avid birdwatcher and bird themes and flight are dominant topics in his poetry. In Birding, or Desire (1983), the quirky protagonist is never far from his Birds of Canada hobbyist’s field guide. McKay’s passion for birds and nature percolates throughout all of his work. McKay sees his writing as “nature poetry in a time of environmental crisis.”[1] McKay’s poems are ecologically centred, inspired by the conflict between inspiration and spiritual, instinct and knowledge. Other members of this emerging group of “ecopoets” include Tim Lilburn, Dennis Lee, Roo Borson, Robert Bringhurst, and Jan Zwicky.[by whom?]
His book of poetic philosophy Vis à Vis: Field Notes on Poetry & Wilderness, details many of McKay’s beliefs on metaphor, wildness, and the homing instinct. McKay’s essay “Baler Twine,” touches on his main poetic themes as well as those of Matériel and poetic attention.
In 2008, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.[2]

"Although I was initially apprehensive about tonsuring my head, the director convinced me it would create a greater impact on the story. Also, I knew this look has worked wonders in the past for many stars, including Superstar Rajinikanth in Sivaji."
Yesteryear actor Karthik is making a comeback to Kollywood with 'Maanja Velu'. The actor, who has been a part of the Tamil film industry for over 29 years, portrays the role of a police officer and the brother of protagonist Arun Vijay.
Talking about his comeback, Karthik says, "It's an emotional re-union with my peers. I don't know why I drifted away from acting for years. I want to thank Mani Ratnam for bringing me back to the industry in his film 'Raavan'. It fetched me ‘Maanja Velu’.
"I didn't want to sign up for any other film till 'Raavan' was released, but my good friend and colleague Prabhu persuaded me to take up the 'Maanja Velu' role. Although I only appear in a guest role, it is a powerful cameo," he adds.
Says the heronie Dhanshika, "I play Anjali, a college student, in the film. It is a bubbly role and I am part of not just the romantic sequences but also the stunt scenes."
"Director Venkatesh has made 'Maanja Velu' with the right commercial elements. I am confident that the movie would become a blockbuster," she says.
The film, which has Mani Sharma scoring the music, is scheduled for release this summer. 'MAANJA VELU' Music REVIEW: Mani Sharma, the busiest music director in both Tamil and Telugu, has scored the music for Arun Vijay’s action flick ‘Maanja Velu’. Veteran lyricist Vaali has written the lyrics for all songs except ‘Yepadithaan’ written by Vivega.

The peppy voices of Tippu and Sujatha have been used effectively in Maanja Velu, which appears to be the title song. It is a catchy number that might resonate in your minds even after you finish listening to it. Lyricist Vaali has penned a youthful number showing that he is still young at heart.
4. Oh My Dear -

Oh My Dear is a fast duet. The tempo in this song is pacy and the music is youthful and lively. Ranjith and Saindhavi sing the song with aplomb, given the fact that they are one among the happening singers in the music circuit.

Karthik sings this slow yet catchy song. Mani Sharma’s music is classy, and Karthik’s charismatic voice really syncs with the music, giving it a meaningful feel. Vaali has penned it superbly. The song is about relationships and their importance in today’s world.
6. Maanja Velu (Remix) -
Singer: Mukesh and Priya Subramanian
This is the biggest surprise in the album. Just listen to the third song in the album (the original version of 'Maanja Velu') and then listen to this. A remix in today’s music world is the racy, techno beats and amplified sound. Well, there is no one single element like those, it is not the remix what one can think of but a remix with traditional beats and Mani Sharma has given that old Tamil black-and-white movie feel especially with Priya Subramanian’s voice. Mukesh gives her company with an equally good performance in this fun number. Absolutely, the pick of the album.
Over all, the music of Maanja Velu will definitely be chart busters and the music will have a wide reach. Mani Sharma, has used the tunes of his hit songs in Telugu in this album, which would surely appeal even to the Tamil audience. Since I've watched MUSA (The Warrior) a few years ago, I'm kinda spoiled. It's really difficult for any other movie, that sets out to outdo MUSA. I haven't watched any movie who could outdo it. Warlords didn't achieve that either, but it's still a very good movie. Which is thanks to the stellar cast (performances), which include Andy Lau, Jet Lee and Takeshi Kaneshiro.
Unfortunately the first time I watched the movie, I did see the dubbed (english) version of it (with Greek subtitles). I couldn't really enjoy it, because quite frankly the dubbing was really bad (you can't re-create a certain mood), but I had the chance to see it again recently and as expected I did like it a lot. I even saw a few new things, character bits in it. It has also great (battle) fight scenes in it, it has a political side to it and small love story. If you're not afraid of watching an Eastern or even better, you like watching them, than you should give this a try! Last night I had the opportunity to view one of the best films i've seen in a very long time. One that stays with you far after the closing credits. One that requires time after viewing to untie all the knots in your stomach.
Peter Chan's "The Warlords" is a period epic in every sense of the word. Chan covers a lot of ground here depicting war and the consequences thereof consisting of his anti-war sentiments. It tells the story of three "brothers" played brilliantly by Jet Li (Fearless), Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs) and Takeshi Kaneshiro (House Of Flying Daggers) who make a pact of brotherhood to one another that consists of killing anyone who harms one of the brothers and killing any brother who harms another brother as they lead an army through war after war taking over city after city.
It's incredible to watch the thought process of making vital decisions during a battle or within their own army to defy humanity for the "greater good". It shows the internal and external struggle of these decisions by opposing points of view. The emotions felt by these men translate in any language and leave you emotionally drained after watching the film through to its tragic end.
The film is set in the 1860s, during the Taiping Rebellion in the late Qing Dynasty in China. The story, based on an unresolved crime in 1870, tells of three sworn brothers who are forced to turn against one another due to the harsh realities of war and political intrigue.
The story begins with a vicious battle, after which Qingyun (Jet Li), a Qing Army General, is the only survivor of his entire army. In his aimless wanderings he encounters a girl named Liansheng (Xu Jinglei), who nurses him back to health. Once he regains his strength, Qingyun soon meets Wuyang (Takeshi Kaneshiro), and later Erhu (Andy Lau); leaders of a bandit army that regularly steals food to survive — his participation in a successful raid on a rebel military convoy immediately earns Qing-Yun their friendship, who take him to their village. There he finds Liansheng again, who is revealed to be Erhu's wife, and they begin an illicit affair.
However, the Qing military learns of the raid and retake the stolen goods, plunging the village once again into famine. Qingyun thus convinces the bandits to join the Qing army to earn money and security to feed their families; Erhu and Wuyang are hesitant at first, and only agree after the three brothers swear a "Blood Oath", with which they affirm their fraternity to one another under pain of death. Qingyun then goes on to meet his old superiors, who are reluctant at first to reinstate him, but upon allowing him the task of conquering a major city, he proves his worth in a victorious battle against a numerically superior force — his subsequent promotion and increased support from the Qing lords spurs him to lead the brothers and his armies through a long but successful campaign against the rebels. His victories cause him to become ambitious in the process, during which he reveals his plan to quickly take Suzhou and Nanjing, including his dream of ridding the world of oppression.
Fearing Qing-yn's growing power and influence, the Qing lords decide to deny Qingyun valuable reinforcements and provisions; without their support, Qingyun's prompt attack on Suzhou devolves into a year long siege, with both sides suffering from starvation. Desperate, Qingyun negotiates with a rival General for supplies, while Erhu sneaks into the city, hoping to negotiate with the official ruling Suzhou - he is surprised to find that the official has realized what the siege is doing to his people; hence the man allows Erhu to kill him and take the city, on the condition that his soldiers be spared. Moved by the official's sacrifice, Erhu agrees to the terms, but a returning Qingyun feels differently: even with the new provisions, food remains critically short, and the rebels would not agree to being conscripted. Instead, he orders the prisoners to be executed, enraging Erhu into considering desertion, but Qingyun manages to convince him to stay and help take Nanjing.
The Nanjing campaign becomes a grand success, and Qingyun is appointed as a provincial governor by the Empress for his services. Nonetheless, the war has caused a rift between the three brothers, most prominently with Erhu, who quietly defies Qingyun's orders by doling out soldier's pay from the imperial coffers; his offenses and popularity become known to the Qing lords, who cajole Qingyun into arranging his assassination. Meanwhile, Wuyang discovers Qingyun's affair with Liansheng and catches wind of the plot against Erhu. Believing that Qingyun wants Erhu killed over Liansheng, Wuyang murders her, but Erhu is already dead before Qingyun hears of Liansheng's death. Wuyang therefore strives to fulfill the blood oath and goes to kill Qingyun at his inauguration ceremony. As the two brothers fight, a hidden attacker armed with a rifle shoots Qingyun in the back multiple times as Wuyang stabs him in the chest, killing him.
Now alone, Wuyang reminisces upon the words of the oath that was taken long ago

His next flick Vettaikkaran is all set to release this Deepavali and the actor is busy selecting a suitable title for his Golden Jubilee film directed by SP Rajkumar.
Produced by Sangili Murugan of Murugan Cine Arts, the film was earlier titled as Urimaikural. But now Vijay is having a second thought about this title and is thinking to change with new one 'Sura' (the name of the lead character in the script!)
Says producer Sangli Murugan, "There are two titles under consideration Urumai Kural and Sura. The film is set in a slum near the sea and the hero's name is Sura. At present we have decided to start the work. The title issue will be decided later..." Vadivelu is playing a crucial role in this film. Tamanna is the heroine. MS Prabhu handles the cameras and Mani Sharma set the scores.

Since I've watched MUSA (The Warrior) a few years ago, I'm kinda spoiled. It's really difficult for any other movie, that sets out to outdo MUSA. I haven't watched any movie who could outdo it. Warlords didn't achieve that either, but it's still a very good movie. Which is thanks to the stellar cast (performances), which include Andy Lau, Jet Lee and Takeshi Kaneshiro.
