After missing the playoffs in 2008-09, the Ottawa Senators are one point away from returning.

With a postseason berth in reach, the Senators look for a sixth consecutive victory Thursday night when they host the Carolina Hurricanes.

When Ottawa's run of 11 straight playoff appearances ended last season, its players dedicated themselves to avoiding a repeat of that disappointment. Now fifth in the Eastern Conference, the Senators (42-30-5) will clinch a playoff spot with their next victory or overtime loss.

"Last year, we let a lot of people down and let ourselves down, not being able to compete for the Stanley Cup," forward Chris Kelly told the Senators' official Web site. "To be one win away from being where we want to be is definitely a good feeling."

Ottawa has won five in a row after dropping its previous five games. The Senators have scored 16 goals during their winning streak -- their longest since an 11-game run Jan. 14-Feb. 4 -- which continued Tuesday with a 5-4 overtime road win over East-leading Washington.

Making the streak even more impressive, Ottawa has managed it with team goal-scoring co-leader Milan Michalek and top-scoring defenseman Filip Kuba each still day-to-day with lower-body injuries.

"At this time of year, not only do you want to win games, but you want to feel good about how you're playing, too," said Ottawa's Jason Spezza, who had two goals and two assists against the Capitals. "Confidence is huge this time of year, and there's a big difference between the win and the loss and how the mood is in the room the next day."

Daniel Alfredsson had four assists Tuesday to extend his point streak to eight games, while Alex Kovalev added a goal -- his first point since the Olympic break.

Kovalev notched a hat trick in a 4-2 home win over Carolina on Dec. 12, the Senators' lone victory in three games against the Hurricanes (33-35-9) this season.

Ottawa, however, has outscored the Hurricanes 18-6 during a four-game home winning streak in this series. The Senators' Brian Elliott is 2-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average at home against Carolina.

While the Senators have a playoff spot virtually wrapped up, it's desperation time for the Hurricanes, who are 11th in the East and seven points out of a playoff spot with five games remaining. They helped keep their slim hopes alive Wednesday, winning 2-1 at Montreal behind goals from Eric Staal and Brandon Sutter and 34 saves from Cam Ward.

"You never can say never and obviously the standings don't look like they're in our favor but mathematically we're not out of it and you've got to come to the rink and compete," Ward said. "At the end of the day this is what we get paid to do and you've got to wear that jersey with some pride and compete."

Ward has stopped 60 of 62 shots to win his two games since missing 19 with a back injury. However, he's compiled a 5.57 GAA while dropping his last three starts in Ottawa.

September 19, 2009 — Robertson Stadium hosted a volatile match between two teams competing for seeding in the playoffs. Historically, Houston opened the game with two goals in five minutes, through Brian Ching and Geoff Cameron.
RSL battled back before the halftime break, as Kyle Beckerman finished a classy interplay in the 27th minute. The comeback stumbled in the 32nd minute, though, when Real’s Jamison Olave was shown a straight red for a hard foul on Brad Davis.
Despite being down to 10 men, Salt Lake continued pressing for the equalizer, and it came in the 61st minute, through a crafty move by Yura Movsisyan.
However, the Dynamo had the final say. Davis struck a gorgeous long-range blast in the 81st minute that left Nick Rimando flailing at air and ripped the side netting. Before it was all over, the bad blood spilled over again as Ching was ejected for an off-the-ball incident.
What's at stake?
Salt Lake and Houston both have hopes of contending for the Western Conference title, and an early-season result would send a statement about the chances of making their hopes a reality.
RSL come to town with the collective bulls-eye of the league on their MLS Cup-carrying backs. They started the season off well, demolishing the San Jose Earthquakes on the road. The star was Argentine midfielder Javier Morales, who scored two lovely goals and set up a third in the 3-0 win. Getting a second away result would continue their goal of improving on their poor 2009 road record.
Houston opened the season with a road draw against in-state rivals FC Dallas. A win against the reigning champs would send an early message that the Dynamo are again one of the top teams in the West and the league.

There's no longer much doubt about whether the Detroit Red Wings will qualify for their 19th consecutive postseason. Instead, the suspense centers around just how high they'll finish in the Western Conference.

The Red Wings could move into fifth place Thursday night in Detroit if they extend their longest winning streak of the season to seven in the first of three remaining meetings with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

After emerging from the Olympic break on the fringe of the playoff picture, the Red Wings responded by going 12-2-1 in March, creating a comfortable cushion ahead of ninth-place Calgary.

Detroit (40-23-13) has surged past Colorado and Los Angeles into sixth place, one point behind Nashville with two games in hand on the Predators, who host St. Louis on Thursday.

Although the Red Wings extended both their home and overall winning streaks to six Tuesday night, their 5-4 victory over Edmonton was not without drama. Detroit squandered a 4-0 lead before Brad Stuart's game-winner with 1:07 left.

"It was one of those nights for us," coach Mike Babcock said. "Obviously we had the game totally in control and when you stop playing a little bit and make some mistakes, suddenly the other team gets going. It's a real good lesson for us."

Detroit never even won seven straight last season, when it reached its second consecutive Stanley Cup finals.

The club is 9-0-1 in its last 10, a stretch featuring impressive performances all over the ice. Jimmy Howard has a 1.76 goals-against average while playing every minute in net, while Henrik Zetterberg, Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen are each averaging at least a point per game.

Howard, who has started Detroit's last 23 games, has gone 2-0-1 with a 0.98 GAA against Columbus this season, and the Red Wings will likely be happy to see the Blue Jackets three times in their final six games.

They're 42-10-5 all-time against Columbus, including a four-game sweep by a combined 18-7 score in the first round of the 2009 playoffs.

The Blue Jackets (32-32-13) won't be back in the postseason after earning their first-ever berth in 2009, but they're playing perhaps their best hockey down the stretch.

They are 3-0-1 in their last four and 7-2-2 in their last 11, including a 3-2 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.

Rick Nash's second goal of the game was the winner with 12:23 left and Kristian Huselius had two assists, giving him 15 points in his last nine games.

"We can tell we are a totally different team now then we were a couple months ago," said Nash, whose club is 10-5-4 since interim coach Claude Noel replaced Ken Hitchcock on Feb. 3.

"I think Claude plays a different style," the Blue Jackets captain added. "The young guys have a lot more confidence than they did before."

The Red Wings have done a good job bottling up Columbus' leading scorer lately, holding Nash to two goals and two assists in the teams' last eight meetings, including the playoffs. The Blue Jackets have totaled 10 goals while going 1-7-0 in that stretch.

Columbus goalie Steve Mason has experienced both extremes against Detroit this season. He allowed a career-high eight goals in a 9-1 loss Nov. 11, then had 34 saves in a 1-0 overtime win over the Red Wings in the most recent meeting Dec. 28.

The Orlando Magic struggled against Dallas earlier this season, but after extra time off, they'll face a Mavericks team that may be sluggish after an overtime win.

With the return of one of their top scoring threats possible, Orlando visits Dallas on Thursday night looking to cool off Dirk Nowitzki, who has been dominating in the series for some time.

The Magic (52-22) haven't played since a 103-97 win over Denver on Sunday, and return to action trying for their 14th win in 17 games. However, defeating Nowitzki and the Mavericks (50-25) has proven to be difficult.

Orlando fell 95-85 to Dallas on Feb. 19 for its sixth defeat in the last seven meetings between the teams. Nowitzki, who had 23 points in that game, has scored at least 20 his last 14 games against the Magic, and is averaging 28.1 points in the last nine.

The Magic, who ended a 10-game skid in Dallas in February 2008, shot 16.0 percent from 3-point range against the Mavericks earlier this season. Dwight Howard paced Orlando with 29 points and 16 rebounds.

Howard leads the Magic with 18.6 points per game, and may need to carry the bulk of the scoring again with Vince Carter (16.5 ppg) having played just 95 seconds against the Nuggets due to a sprained toe. Carter is considered day-to-day, but is listed in the starting lineup posted on the Magic's official Web site.

Orlando showed off its depth Sunday. J.J. Redick scored 23 points and had career highs of eight assists and seven rebounds while Ryan Anderson scored 19 points in 20 minutes off the bench.

"I think we showed that we can win with a bunch of different lineups," Anderson said. "There's not a lot of teams, maybe none, who can do that."

Orlando, which visits San Antonio on Friday, first looks to take advantage of a Mavericks team returning home after a 106-102 overtime win over Memphis on Wednesday in which they had trailed by as many as 13.

"This team doesn't have any quit in them," Mavericks center Brendan Haywood said. "We're not going give in. As long as we think we have a shot, we're going to continue to fight and play hard."

Jason Terry scored 29 points and Nowitzki had 28, although he shot 9 of 23 from floor.

Despite his struggles, Nowitzki scored 10 of the Mavericks' final 11 points in the fourth quarter and then had six points in the last 24 seconds of overtime, including all four of his foul shots.

"He's the type of guy that has so much confidence in his shot," Haywood said. "His shot is so pure that you know eventually he's going to start making them."

Dallas, which has won three straight after losing four of six, clinched its 10th straight season of 50 or more victories. San Antonio and the Lakers were the only teams to compile 10 straight 50-win seasons since the league went to an 82-game schedule in 1967-68.

Plot

Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a typical teenage boy, wonders why no one has ever decided to become a real-life superhero like the heroes in the comic books. Adapted from Mark Millar's hyper-violent comic book of the same name, director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake)'s vigilante superhero film tells the tale of an average New York teenager who decides to don a costume and fight crime. Comic book geek Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) may not have good coordination or special powers, but that doesn't mean he isn't a fully-capable crime fighter. After purchasing a flashy wet-suit on the internet, Dave starts busting up baddies with nothing but brute force. He calls himself Kick-Ass, and he can take a beating as good as he can dish one out. Before long, Kick-Ass has become a local sensation, and others are following his lead. Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and Hit-Girl (Chloe Moritz) are a father-daughter crime-fighting duo who have set their sights on local mob heavy Frank D'Amico (Mark Strong). They're doing a decent job of dismantling Frank's sizable underworld empire when Kick-Ass gets drawn into the fray. But Frank's men play rough, and his son Chris (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) is about to become Kick-Ass' very first arch nemesis. On the surface, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) looks just like your typical dweeby high school student. He sucks at sport, goes unnoticed by girls and hangs out at the local comic book emporium. But when Dave dons his special mail-order green wetsuit he becomes… well, he becomes a guy in a wetsuit. Kick-Ass, the crime-fighting alter-ego Dave creates for himself, has no superpowers or extraordinary abilities, except for what he describes as an elevated capacity to take a kicking. This is the delicious premise of Kick-Ass. There’s been a lot of fun had with humanising new and classic superheroes of late – the Watchmen, Hancock, the Incredibles, the perpetually broody Spider-Man, etc. – but, in Kick-Ass, we finally have a new ‘superhero’ that is just some guy, as pathetically ‘human’ as the rest of us.

Meanwhile, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his eleven-year-old daughter Hit Girl (Chloë Moretz) are honing their skills and buying toys to become bona fide superheroes. Cage is the best he’s been in years in this role, probably because he’s enjoying himself, replicating that unmistakable Adam West cadence as soon as he dons his Batman-style gear. Moretz, as the Internets will have told you by now, is a revelation, a foul-mouthed, pocket-sized version of The Bride in total command of the best action sequences of the film. It’s a child role that eats other child roles for breakfast – Moretz herself played another ho-hum precocious kid sister in 500 Days of Summer – and Moretz owns it.

Then there’s Chris D’Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), son of local drug baron and bad guy Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong). Chris eventually becomes Red Mist, a would-be supervillain posing as a superhero, with the best superhero outfit of the lot of them (it includes a cape). It’s off with the specs at last for Mintz-Plasse – all the better to see his evil sideways glances – and his performance is all the better for it. This is Mintz-Plasse bidding farewell to McLovin’, and not a moment too soon.

Kick-Ass is directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust) with style and flair – he makes the gymnastic shoot-out sequences look easy – but it’s fairer to say that Kick-Ass comes from the mind of comic world artist/demigod Mark Millar. Millar created Wanted and has also spent a lot of time shaking up the DC and Marvel universes, so it’s no surprise that Kick-Ass shows off its self-awareness, saluting and subverting comic book conventions with good humour. This is, of course, just the kind of thing to endear it to newcomers and long-time comic book aficionados. In fact, the place-filler soundtrack at this early screening gives an idea of just how well Kick-Ass plays into the superhero tradition: John Williams’s score from Superman sounded out as Dave gets into his wetsuit and Danny Elfman’s score from Batman accompanied the scenes in Chris’s own Batmobile, a red Ford Mustang. It’s just a shame there’s no way these will make it to the final cut.

Action and comedy is no new cocktail, but there’s something striking about the particular blend in Kick-Ass. If Wanted was Chuck Palahniuk-does-superheroes, Kick-Ass could be Superbad meets Superman. Dave fantasises over his English teacher, discusses the finer details of comic book heroes and skillfully avoids telling token hot girl Katie that he’s not gay. But then it’s also gloriously brutal. When Dave gets his own ass kicked during his first attempt at fighting crime, it starts off funny – he looks ridiculous – but the sudden fierceness of the scene takes everyone by surprise. Kick-Ass could have easily been played for easy laughs the whole way through, but this is the point at which Kick-Ass announces, loudly and proudly, that it’s taking a different route, and it’s especially not going to compromise on sheer bloody violence. What’s more, further to some spectacular death scenes, there are sequences that would rival those of the most gripping and thought-provoking action drama.

This won’t be a unique observation – watch us film critics flock to this one – but if you have a movie

Lee Smith is set for a dramatic return to rugby league in Thursday evening's West Yorkshire derby at Headingley Carnegie.

Smith rejoined the Leeds Rhinos on Wednesday after an ill-fated attempt to switch codes with Guinness Premiership team Wasps.
The 23-year-old, who scored two tries on his last appearance for the Rhinos in the 2009 Grand Final victory, has signed a four-year contract.
The England international centre is expected to slot straight back into the old routine, having been parachuted in to the squad for the visit of Bradford Bulls.
Rhinos head coach Brian McClennan also has Brett Delaney, Kylie Leuluai and Kevin Sinfield back in contention.
The trio sat out the 24-4 defeat against Wigan at the DW Stadium last week through injury.

With five games left, the Atlanta Thrashers have little margin for error if they hope to make the playoffs for the second time in franchise history.

Their schedule could not be any less forgiving.

Three Eastern Conference heavyweights are the Thrashers' remaining opponents, and Atlanta makes the first of two visits to the nation's capital looking to avoid a seventh straight loss to the NHL-leading Washington Capitals on Thursday night.

Atlanta (34-31-12) has gone 6-2-1 in the past nine games as it tries to make a late postseason push, but to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2007, it will definitely have to earn it.

The Thrashers' past four games came against Toronto and Carolina, and after Nik Antropov's third-period goal capped a 3-2 win over the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, Atlanta is within two points of a playoff spot.

The remaining five contests, however, are considerably more imposing. Atlanta visits Washington (49-15-12) twice, hosts New Jersey and plays a home-and-home with Pittsburgh -- its three most likely first-round opponents should it sneak in.

"It's been a must-win for the last month or so it feels like," forward Colby Armstrong said. "We know what the schedule is. Five games left and we've got some tough teams coming up. We're going to have to get rested up here as best we can for this last push."

A potential playoff matchup with the Capitals, who have the East's No. 1 seed wrapped up, does not bode well for coach John Anderson's club. Atlanta has lost all four meetings to its Southeast Division rival this season, and has been outscored 32-16 in losing the last six matchups in the series in regulation.

Alex Ovechkin has recorded three goals and seven assists in that stretch, while Alexander Semin has five goals and three assists.

Washington has a comfortable cushion on San Jose in the race for the Presidents' Trophy, but having the NHL's best record hasn't been beneficial in recent years once the postseason begins. Five of the last six winners failed to make it to the Stanley Cup finals, with only the 2007-08 Red Wings capturing the cup.

The Capitals have shown some potentially troubling signs over their last three games, getting outscored 9-1 in the first period in going 0-1-2 in that stretch.

Washington fell 5-4 in overtime to visiting Ottawa on Tuesday.

"Maybe we're not ready for the first period," said center Nicklas Backstrom, who has 29 goals but three in his last 16 games. "... So we have to get ready now and play a good 60 minutes. We haven't played a good 60 minutes in a while."

Coach Bruce Boudreau seemed a bit concerned about his goaltending after the loss to the Senators. Jose Theodore kept his remarkable streak without a regulation loss (17-0-3) intact, but was not sharp one game after getting pulled for allowing three goals on 10 shots in the first period.

Theodore has a 3.27 goals-against average in his last seven starts.

"I don't like five goals against," Boudreau said. "That has happened twice in a row and we've got to get better. There were four pretty iffy goals out there (against Ottawa)."

Utter domination of the Toronto Maple Leafs is one reason why the Buffalo Sabres are atop the Northeast Division and returning to the playoffs. Continuing that dominance Thursday night in Toronto could give the Sabres their second division title in four seasons.

Buffalo (43-23-10) has won 10 consecutive games against the Maple Leafs (28-36-13) overall, and eight straight at Toronto -- the longest active road winning streak by any NHL club over another.

The Sabres' last loss at Air Canada Centre was a 4-2 defeat Jan. 19, 2008. They've outscored the last-place Leafs 17-8 to win all five meetings in 2009-10, regardless of venue.

Buffalo is in position to sweep a season series from the Maple Leafs for the first time since 1991-92, when the teams were in different conferences and only met twice.

Partially due to their success against the Leafs, the Sabres have already clinched a playoff spot and own a seven-point lead on Ottawa in the Northeast. Another win over the Maple Leafs combined with a Senators' loss to Carolina would secure Buffalo's first division crown since 2007.

The Sabres are also second in the East -- one point ahead of Atlantic Division-leading Pittsburgh with six games to play -- after getting goals from six players in Wednesday's 6-2 win over Florida.

"It's a big step when you have that much depth," said right wing Jason Pominville, who netted his team-leading 24th goal. "Guys have stepped in at different moments and played well."

That depth has been key with center Tim Connolly (foot) and left wing Thomas Vanek (lower body) sidelined due to injury. It's unclear when the duo will return, but both players are key offensive cogs. Connolly leads Buffalo with 65 points, while Vanek is second to Pominville with 23 goals.

Pominville, Connolly and Vanek have all been superb during the 10-game winning streak against the Leafs. Pominville has a team-high 13 points in those contests, while Connolly has contributed 11 and Vanek 10.

Ryan Miller, who only faced 15 shots Wednesday, has also thrived against Toronto, posting a 1.39 goals-against average and two shutouts while starting each game of the winning streak. He's also won eight consecutive road meetings.

The Maples Leafs are relegated to the spoiler role, having been eliminated from playoff contention for a fifth consecutive season after Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Atlanta.

"We handed them the game," coach Ron Wilson said. "They did some things well, but we just gave them the game, essentially. Unfortunately."

As Toronto turns its focus to the future, forward Brayden Irwin is scheduled to make his NHL debut after signing a two-year contract Monday.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Irwin led Vermont with 34 points and helped the team earn a second straight bid to the NCAA tournament. The Toronto native is expected to play the final six games of the season before returning to Burlington to finish school.

"I've only been here for a couple of days, so I'm still making the adjustment," he said. "The last couple of days have been a little bit of a whirlwind, but it's exciting and I'm looking forward to getting on the ice."

The seed is planted and Ray, fearing he will lose his love, engineers the plan. Hiring a professional arsonist becomes a fatal error, and the plan goes horribly wrong. Alarm bells sound and suspicions are raised, but miraculously, the dust looks to settle. After all...Nobody knows. Then the first blackmail note arrives. The couple’s nerves are tested as both Carla’s husband and the mystery author threaten to throw open their secret. With the blackmailer’s deadline approaching they are going to find out just how far they are willing to go for love.

THE SQUARE is the first feature film from Australian stuntman-turned-director Nash Edgerton and his brother Joel (who co-wrote and stars in the film). Joel Edgerton recently starred in "A Streetcar Named Desire" opposite Cate Blanchett in Sydney and at BAM in New York City and is currently in production on "The Thing", a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 film. Nash Edgerton recently coordinated the stunts for Sofia Coppola's upcoming "Somewhere" and James Mangold's upcoming "Knight and Day" starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

Review


Australian cinema has been on the down-low in North America for some time now (albeit, their film stars emigrate to Hollywood on the same order as Canada and the UK), but there has been some really solid stuff coming from down under lately, including Last Ride, Van Dieman's Land and The Loved Ones. The Square, a stylish crime picture directed by stuntman Nash Edgerton, has been touring the festival circuit for some time, had its domestic bow way back in July 2008, is finally getting a limited release in the US and Canada in April and a handsomely cut trailer has popped up on Vimeo (below).

The film stars a bevy of awesome Australian actors, including David Roberts (who is a dead ringer for David Strathairn!) in the lead, Claire Van Der Boom, Anthony Hayes, Hanna Mangan Lawrence and Joel Edgerton.

The Square is getting a limited (NY, LA) release on April 9th, followed (hopefully) by a widening in May. Here in Canada the film launches in Toronto April 16th.

Movie was inspired by a true story and no wonders why all ready Letters to God (2010) movie have all the necessary stuff line up for the movie released. Few good movie trailer are giving the best shot at the movie plot and some times it want let any one with out having kind of tear on the eyes of them. Most of the fans did love to see some deep stories and this movie does suited for those kinds of fans really want to see some thing related to reality and fairy.



If any one do believes on some thing very strongly it was bow to happen and this was the policy shown by this wonderful movie. This movie not only shows how the people get laid down with some deceases like cancer and it was a fine movie adoption for those really suffers from it and hope to add wish courage with the movie. It bring some short of straight to every ones mind and it shows how any one can explore the life with having a clean heart and desire.  This movie was at the top gear to show the religiosity manner of a kid and finally it makes him so closer to the god and it was one of the finest of movies made the catholic valued.

Rather in the movie it based on a boy who was well into the later part of the cancer and others who are around him not as strong as this kid. Some times in life people have to consider about the faith but some times when you know nothing worst than wasting the time left to live this boy find the perfect way to get to god. It was by writing some of the letters to god he thinks the only solutions for his life.  It was one of the most enthused story for many for sure and the story of a kid have some short of desperation of hope to live another day happily makes the movie more drama and complex with so many other stuff.



But what happens in the movie was pretty drama with a post man collect these letter and he find solutions for this boys faith, been what he desire and even he loose the way of his own life as the beginning he was a nothing else than a looser and with the time been reading this letters to god he begins to feel more life for this boy and able to find the love of his life and also the path of god. Tyler Doherty was the boy who writes these letters to god and his thoughts might bring tears to most of fans eyes for sure. Brady McDaniels was the man who collects all these letters and after then life makes him to get closer to this family and even fell in love with the mother of the kid. It was one of the wishers of the kid to bring some one to take care of her. What a nice movie feeling made in the movie and this was quite extraordinary faith.

As comic-turned movies usually go, this was one that is unlike any other. From Sylvain White, director of Stomp The Yard, this movie brings an edge to comic-book movies. This is a surprise mix of action, comedy, and just a tad bit of drama. The Losers is a substantial Saturday-night's entertainment.

The Losers starts with an attack by a CIA team (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, and Oscar Jaenada), which was a pretty predictable way for the movie to start. The team soon realizes after the compound is demolished, that they had been set up by someone named Max. Since they have no passports, they are bound in the country. Then Clay (Morgan) meets Aisha (Saldana) in a bar, she informs him that she can get them back to the States and help them catch Max. They agree, and the story begins.

For the next hour, the silly quips by technical analyst Jensen (Evans) is the only break in between the mediocre action scenes and the dull dialogue. The action and fight scenes are something that this type of audience has seen many times--making those scenes just average. Jeffrey Dean Morgan's portrayal of Clay is good, but a bigger star attached would have gotten a wider audience. Warner Brothers decided to provide a new side of Zoe Saldana--a badass one used for the same purposes as Megan Fox's character in Transformers. The set is nothing spectacular either, I noticed that I've seen the same locations used in up to as many as 3 previous movies. However, The twist halfway through movie renders more thought out of the audience, in the end just confusing them.
